All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson

challenging emotional informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

4.0

I love reading memoirs, but it’s not often I find myself reading YA memoirs, but I’m so glad I picked this one up! This one is such a powerful read. All Boys Aren’t Blue explores gender, sexuality, identity, discussed consent, homophobia and racism and so much more. It’s a collection of short essays, which made it feel quite quick to read. I listened the audiobook of this on BorrowBox and to be honest that made it even more powerful, hearing George M Johnson’s words in their own voice.

George talks about his own experiences, his family’s experiences, and says how even though they weren’t exactly excited about being vulnerable by being this open in their memoir, that if it helps even one person, it’s worth it. And I am in no doubt that this book will do that.

It is insane that this is a banned book in the USA. I’ve seen a lot of people pick it up lately for the #TransRightsReadathon 🏳️‍⚧️ and I’m so glad that this book is being read so much! Definitely recommend it!
