Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin

thought it was beautiful to see their love for each other be so intermingled with hatred. there was always this undercurrent of anger in everything they did, this weird feeling that they could hurt each other but were making a deliberate choice not to every time they were together. it's strange because it shouldn't be romantic at all but it is. especially that part with the bricks. really gorgeous.

"If you cannot love me, I will die. Before you came I wanted to die, I have told you many times. It is cruel to have made me want to live only to make my death more bloody."
