The Gentleman's Gambit by Evie Dunmore
5.0
This is a 5 star read for me.
Without ever compromising the centrality of the romance between the hero and heroine, this book manages to include storylines about women’s suffrage, the role of mothers in Victorian England, and Western theft of Eastern artifacts.
I know some readers felt the story contained too much historical information, but I never found it tedious. The historical details were usually relevant to the storyline and brought depth to the story.
Also- Evie Dunmore just knows how to write. Her writing is elegant without being flowery. She makes it look easy, but it’s a minority of authors who can convey meaningful ideas through such crisp language.
I truly adored this book and thought it was uniquely intelligent, complex, and romantic. Five stars for me.
