Love That Story: Observations from a Gorgeously Queer Life by Jonathan Van Ness
5.0
I adore this book and all criticism comes from a place of love and adoration for someone talking about very important concepts to a fairly mainstream audience.
I’m always disappointed by people missing the point of body positivity. While body neutrality is important JVN had an opportunity to talk about fat positivity and the skinny white washing of the body posi movement and instead continued the simplistic rhetoric.
Jvn said that people aren’t discussing eugenics when that is a huuuuge point of discussion in disability activism movements. It was within the context of gender but it felt dismissive of the hard work disability activists do every day.
The tone of this was so beautifully balanced, JVN made space for a lot of very important voices and modeled a lot of great learning and reflecting behaviors for becoming a better and more informed person. Wonderful book.
