SpoilerLet’s start with the positive. I enjoyed the dual POV, definitely preferring the mother’s perspective. I do think the novel did a good job of booking you from the beginning. But it was all downhill from there. I can’t get over the banter. At first it was so bad it was funny. Then it was just bad. The primary conflict was predictable but interesting, which is what I’ve come to expect out of Hoover. Miller and Clara were cute at first—cringey but cute. As they progressed though, they became just insufferable: High schoolers don’t talk like that. Most humans don’t talk to each other like that:
