The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

1.0

I've heard that The Silent Patient is a great book, so I still plan to give that one a try, but finishing this one makes me a bit hesitant.

It started out pretty decent, but there are so many elements to this story that make it extremely weak. There are characters whose existence add nothing to the plot, rushed and/or over-exaggerated storylines that end abruptly or have no bearing on the conclusion to the story, and the ending was almost insulting to readers. The plot twist wasn't plausible and the main antagonist turned out to be pointless - his storyline really took an abrupt and strange, rushed turn. It felt like I was reading a grad student's paper who had to rush and meet a deadline and thus couldn't fully develop the characters, story or plot. I think this author has potential to do something a lot better.
