Member of the Family: My Story of Charles Manson, Life Inside His Cult, and the Darkness That Ended the Sixties by Deborah Herman, Dianne Lake
5.0
I'm infatuated with anything related to the 1960s-70s. So when I saw this book at my library, I knew I had to read it. I had always heard about Charles Manson and the Sharon Tate murders, and wanted to know the gritty details of what cult followers go through....."How do they fall for that?"
Dianne answers that for me in this book. At first I wasn't sure why we had to know so much about her and her background in this book, but it all became very clear even as others joined the Family and what they all had in common. This book left me in tears as Dianne tells of her recovery and how her two years with the Manson Family stayed with her throughout her life.
We also get a really good picture of what it is like to be inside a cult and what lengths people will go to how much they will tolerate, and how brainwashed they can get when someone uses their power over the vulnerable.
Excellent book!
