Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov

5.0

Spectacular writing and story.
What a great novel. There were no detracting factors.
I loved all the characters. The plot was smooth yet not predictable. I feel that I could read this book several more times and still gain from it, the mark of a 5 star book for me.
There was a great deal of depth which one could focus on if they code to. These themes related to the meaning of life and it’s endless cycles. On one hand, as seen in Olga, one can live every day to the fullest and still be unfulfilled and lacking in purpose. On the other, on the case of Oblomov, one can find peace and purpose in their own inertia. I was reminded of man’s search for meaning, except I’m the opposite side of the spectrumI appreciate the fact that Oblomov is a multidimensional character with many redeeming qualities.
This book is full of originality and food for thought. I learned to appreciate the human desire to grow and yearn for more, even when there is nothing evident to reach for.
I also loved the themes of rejuvenation being optional and that one can choose not to spend the day napping.
