Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke
5.0
I think this book has become one if my favourites! I loved it so much that as soon as I'd finished it I wanted to flip right to the beginning and start again!
This book has the two things that I love the most in it, history and magic!! This book is written as though magic is real and is a strong foundation of English history. The footnotes themselves could make an excellent story!
The characters are so well written! Mr Norrell who is the villain of the story but not of the book. Despite all that he does, you still feel sorry for him and understand how easily led he is. You wouldn't want to see any harm actually come to him! The man with the thistle down hair had me spooked so much that I wouldn't be able to walk round with my lights on after reading a chapter or two!
For me the third volume was the best, it was so fast paced and all these little mysteries were starting to line up and really grab your attention. All the different character's stories were coming to an end and there was a real build up and is progressed.
The only two slightly negative things I would have to say are that I found half way through the book when the war was the main topic just a tad too slow for me, and also the ending! With all the build up towards the end of the book I did find myself a little disappointed by the ending, just because it wasn't the ending I wanted for the characters.
