When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro

2.0

Hmmmmm. Having loved Remains Of The Day and Never Let Me Go I thought I was in for a treat with this one. I am not sure what the aim of it was. Was it a mystery, thriller, abook about the emptiness of losing parents at a young age, a strange opium fuelled dream....it was all and none of these things. At one time it seemed to pursue a strange relationship with a woman...but that was erratic and unconvincing.
To be honest the more I write this the less I like the book. The ‘celebrated detective’ aspect of it was so implausible...was that all in Christopher’s head? The way there was a big jump from London to full on detective work in Shanghai was ...I think...not well done. The ‘adopted daughter section made no sense and contributed nothing to the story....especially the ending.

It seems heathenish to say I didn’t enjoy a book by Ishiguro ...did I miss something?

My review here is as all over the place as the book. I didn’t like it much. Sadly
