The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism by Tim Alberta

4.0

This was an insightful and disturbing pulling back of the curtain behind the American evangelicalism. What makes this such an interesting read is that the author, a longtime political reporter for Politico and other prominent outlets, is also the son of an evangelical minister who is still deeply religious and theologically, if not politically/socially, conservative. This gives him access to spaces and perspectives that even progressive Christians do not have. His critiques are sharpened by his own sincere faith and experiences within both the church and Beltway political circles. His thesis that the American evangelical church worships America, power, and wealth, not God is a persuasive one and particularly timely given the ever growing influence of Christian nationalism.

Highly recommended, especially in the lead up to the election.
