Regretting You by T. Ashleigh
4.0
To say that I was waiting for this book is an understatement. I was dying to read the Greg and Tyler's story! And I just need to say: I loved them so much! From the beginning of the series, and despite the fact that in the first two books they were just side characters, you knew that they had history, and that it was important enough to affect the lives of the other characters (as it was in the case of Hudson and Ryan).
Their story was a roller coaster of emotions: First you suffer for Tyler because of his father and his bigotry and mistreatment, then you're happy because he and Greg meet at the academy and Greg gives him everything he needs: someone who cares for him, defends and supports him and even at such a young age you can see the deep bond that forms between them. But more importantly, he gives him a glimpse of what motherly love can really be when he introduces him and his mother, giving him what his own family denies him. So when tragedy strikes, not only do we have Greg who breaks down and spirals into depression and self-destruction, afraid to love again and lose, but we also have Tyler who not only loses the only woman that's ever shown affection to him, but also loses the person around whom his world revolves, Greg. However, he doesn't have time to grieve his loss of her, because Greg pushed him away, turning into someone so opposite to the Greg he once knew: malicious, aggressive and mean, so Tyler builds a wall to hide his feelings and to protect himself and tries to move on while avoiding crossing paths with Greg for the next 3 years.
For Greg, those years were torture, even though he hid it behind a cynical and indifferent mask. But he was falling deeper and deeper into his depression, he had not only lost his mother and Tyler, but his father becomes a distant figure and now he is married again and has eyes only for his new wife. And I have to say, to me he is equal to or even worse than Tyler's father with his bigotry and indifference. Because he had to see how much his child was suffering and instead of supporting him and helping him, he moved on with his life hoping that Greg would just accept it. All of this only served to sink Greg further into feeling that he was worthless and unlovable.
But like everything that is destined to be, their paths inevitably cross again when they have to share a class and must work together and while Tyler tries to maintain a cold and indifferent front, deep down, he misses Greg and this allows Greg to see past that indifference and he takes the opportunity to reconnect with Tyler. Things happen and everything explodes at once, causing them to be separated again but this time, Greg realizes that he can't lose Tyler again, so he fights to get him back.
The reason why I don't give it 5 stars is because the situation with his father is unresolved. And I would have liked to see his father open his eyes and try to rebuild the relationship with his son.
What I did like is that Greg ends up accepting he needs the therapy and taking seriously, and so that he can finally begin to heal and live his life and enjoy the love Tyler feels for him.
