Under the Dome: Part One by Stephen King, Stephen King
1.0
Did not finish. And I always finish.
I only ready about a third of this book before giving up. After loving [b:The Green Mile|11566|The Green Mile|Stephen King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1373903563l/11566._SY75_.jpg|15599] a number of years ago, and having enjoyed watching The Mist I was excited to finally read another Stephen King book. And maybe someday I'll try another, but this left a bad taste in my mouth.
The premise itself is fantastic. Invisible dome traps a small city, citizens have to fend for themselves while being cut off from the outside world. There is some fun writing at the start involving an unfortunate woodchuck, and then the book kinda falls apart. There is really one big problem with it. The characters are all so bloody unlikable. Even the main character that I'm supposed to be rooting for isn't great. He's ex-army and a drifter. Basically his only defining personality traits are that he can cook, and he isn't a sociopath like pretty much every other character in the town.
The characters also lacked any depth. They were simply good or evil, and they all felt so cliche that it was hard to be interested in any of them. Especially because they all read kinda the same. It's possible that they get better as the book progresses, but given what I read in the book, and what I'm seeing in the reviews, either you'll love this book right away or it'll never grab you.
I would recommend this book to die hard [a:Stephen King|3389|Stephen King|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1362814142p2/3389.jpg] fans only. Otherwise just watch The Mist. It's basically the same story but shorter and with better characters.
