Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion

5.0

It hurts an awful fucking lot. Actually, scratch that. Every sentence, every word, every syllable hurts in ways you didn't think language could. Didion uses words the way soldiers use grenades, and every scene in this book starts with the pin being yanked out and the suspended moments of awful, terrifying silence before the boom. She is a merciless genius, and this is a masterpiece.
