Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
4.0
I was really reluctant to pick up this book as I have never really had an urge to read it, the synopsis didn't necessarily appeal to me and I had heard negative things about it. When I saw that it was on Scribd as an audiobook I decided that I had nothing to loose.
I actually really enjoyed this book, a lot more than I thought I would. It was very short but a very easy read/listen. I devoured this book on a couple of journeys to work and found myself sitting in my car longer than necessary just so I can listen to a little bit more. I love the atmosphere that has been created by the author, it is so original and eerie, this really helps with the reading experience in a way that you just don't want to put it down once you have started.
Some of this is pretty dark, and some is definitely not for the faint hearted. You will get blood and death, not a spoiler, however you will get this in pretty graphic detail. This is why I would recommend listening to this book on audio as it really captures the atmosphere and the suspense that this book is designed to give.
The characters is this book were also good, I am still very intrigued by a lot of them including Eleanor, Jack and Jill. I definitely finished this book wanting a lot more from these characters. But I suppose that is not a bad thing because I have immediately started the next book just to get that satisfaction. Whilst there are a lot of characters it is not confusing in the slightest. It is very easy to follow and you can understand who is who with very little confusion.
The one criticism I do have about this book is the talk of vaginas. I found that very unnecessary and a little bit uncomfortable due to this. I am not easily offended, and was not necessarily offended by this but I did find it a bit pointless and maybe not as funny as I think it may have been intended. I think that may be the only criticism that I really have, apart from the fact they are really short and a little too expensive to buy myself a physical copy!
I would recommend this book, especially the audio version. Credit to the narrator who did a really good job. I am looking forward to seeing what the rest of the series brings, I am hoping for just as much enjoyment as this one!
