Did not finish book.

2.0

I had to finally DNF this book at 40%, but it wasn’t for the reasons I’m seeing on other reviews. It wasn’t the lack of romance or the writing style for Leon’s perspective. It was actually the very weird and unnecessary race politics throughout the story.

From the beginning, Tiffy says upon seeing a picture of Leon that “lt's a relief to see that he's not my type at all,” which okay, sure. But the first thing she describes is his “light brown skin.” That put a bad taste in my mouth but pushed through.

Then we have the fact that Leon’s brother is in jail as an innocent man, which is an odd and stereotypical thing to have a black man go through, but okay. It happens. Kept reading.

I finally had to put the book down when it’s revealed that Leon’s brother is in jail because he was set up by the Bloods. Now I don’t know how many of these readers are American, but the Bloods are a gang based out of the States that started in Los Angeles. So it’s a very, very weird choice to have them be the evil gang members that put Leon’s brother in jail for something he didn’t do. Aren’t there English gangs? British ones? Some other European groups that were on holiday?

Also, Leon is a terrible boyfriend to Kay. It made me not want to route for him and Tiffy to even get together. Which is fine because Tiffy isn’t attracted to black men anyways. But I digress.
