The book starts off with an intense incident that would be the starting point to all the latter events. Emira, a woman of color, babysitter to the Chamberlain family, is called up by Alix Chamberlain at late hours to take out little Briar while the police handles a situation that occured at their house. Emira takes Briar to a local grocery store to pass the time but a certain lady that was shopping there reports to the security guard that the duo seems a bit off to her, this resulting in Emira being questioned by him and accused of kidnapping Briar.
The two main characters are Emira and Alix.
Emira is caught inbetween two jobs, non of which offer her health insurance or other benefits and she constantly compares herself to her friends regarding her income and career. The people around Emira seem to be more bothered about her choices than she is so that puts extra pressure on her to change things up in her life even if she isn’t necessarily eager to.
Alix has good intentions but she puts them into action in very chaotic ways that often come with great consequences and this builds her a sometimes extreme personality: invading and disregarding people’s privacy and boundaries, not caring about consent and changing scenarios to her advantage, regardless of the impact this has on other people. The thing is a lot of her actions seem to be rooted in loneliness — mom of two, moved to Philadelphia as a promise to her husband, far from her friends and her New York life.
There would be much more to discuss, the book touches topics like race, class, privilege, feminism and other. There isn’t really any significant character or plot development, but this book offers great topics to talk about, debate and look more into. Besides, it reads easily and quickly, so there really is no reason to not give it a try💕
