Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

This is such a wonderful and powerful book!  If you've never read it as a Christian, I believe it is a MUST read.  For a non-Christian, I invite you to read it too as Lewis was someone who was an atheist and then became a Christian.

This book was actually first produced as radio commentaries way back when people listened to the radio before everyone had TV.  His verbal illustrations and examples were used superbly to connect Christian foundations, theology and behaviour to real life examples to make it really easy to understand what he is trying to explain.  He takes away the boundaries that divide Christianity's denominations so that believers and nonbelievers alike can hear a powerful and rational case for the Christian faith.

Some of my favorite quotes:

**The terrible thing, the almost impossible thing, is to hand over your whole self - all your wishes and precautions - to Christ.  It is far easier than what we are all trying to do instead.  For what are we are trying to do  is to remain what we call "ourselves", to keep personal happiness as our great aim in life, and yet at the same time be "good".  We are all trying to let our mind and heart go their own way - centered on money or pleasure or ambition - and hoping, in spite of this, to behave honestly and chastely and humbly.  And this is exactly what Christ warned us you could not do.  As he said a thistle cannot produce figs.

**It is something like that with Christ and us.  The more we get what we now call "ourselves" out of the way and let Him take us over, the more truly ourselves we become.

**The principle runs through all life from top to bottom.  Give up yourself, and you will find your real self.  Lose your life and you will save it.  Submit to death, death of your ambitions, and favorite wishes every day and death of your whole body in the end:  submit with every fiber of your being, and you will find eternal life.  Keep nothing back........But look for Christ and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in
