I have had time to sit on this book and really think about it before writing this review.
I think "The Will to Change" illustrates perfectly how patriarchy hurts men. I think its a great book that could benefit people to broaden their understanding of that idea. Unlike some other reviews, I don't really see this book as dated. I think a lot of the issues discussed are still pretty relevant to the men of today. It is a bit dated in some of the hetero-normative comments it makes, but I didn't find it to be a huge problem. Honestly a solid enough introduction to how patriarchy hurts men.
I think my biggest problem with the book is that it feels really naive. Love being men's answers to overcoming patriarchy is so much easier said than done. Hooks points out all the problems perfectly but then when asked for solutions the best we can come up with is "love conquers all." Its not exactly a "how to" so if that is what you are looking for, lower your expectations.
But its still a pretty good book. 3.5-ish I would say.
