Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison
5.0
An endearing coming-of-age (even if it’s mostly about 30-year-olds), emphasizing the importance of one’s lineage, and the inner workings of Black social lives after the turn of the century. Um… Morrison’s century. Openly explicit, to the point of being a racial essay at times. A little strange and Forrest Gump-esque when it’s name dropping Emmitt Till and Malcolm X, but thankfully it focuses more on Milkman’s awful family history instead of being a history lesson. Only biblical text I need. Happy I went in basically blind instead of trying to make sense of the synopsis.
