The Deal Of A Lifetime by Fredrik Backman

I will read anything Backman writes! He has never disappointed me so far whether it’s his full length novels or short stories. His narrative style, humour, irony, characters and language engage my soul. He tackles huge issues with gentle words while never diminishing their importance. He highlights all aspects of the human condition with a no-nonsense, intelligent and sensitive approach that warms my heart no matter how hard the situation.

This slim novella/short story is primarily philosophical. It tackles the foundational principles of human existence - the purpose of life, death and time, through a father and son interaction that borders on the surreal and yet is deeply authentic. What would one sacrifice for a child, for oneself? What price might one pay for a loved one’s happiness? Is death preferable to never having existed? These are just some of the questions that Backman attempts to answer.

Also, a beautifully published edition with illustrations by Backman himself I think, because I couldn’t find separate credits for an illustrator. A delightful yet somber read.
