For my taste it isn't bad or anything, but the book veers a bit to much into personal journeys/struggles/feelings of the main characters, while actually trying to tell a big story about imperialism and colonialism, presenting only those two perspectives, and while they are both depicted as victims of their circumstances, frequently forced to act on their agendas against their wishes, they are, effectively, also the only agents of change in terms of storytelling, so it did felt like no one else's choices in this story involving at least two nations worth of people ever had any real impact over the direction of the narrative.
