Here is the second book in the Tale of Darkwood series and the story just keeps getting better, and better. This would have to be my favorite so far out of the two I've read by Stacy Upton Bracey.
I love fairy tale retellings. Especially, the ones told with a dark and unexpected twist. The Twins of Darkwood is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel but with much more violence and a different villain. Let's just say, you don't want to mess with Hansel and Gretel in this story.
A book with the arrange marriage troupe, unexpected heroes and very loveable characters, Stacy managed to create another addicting book showcasing her natural skill in writing. The pacing and storytelling is outstanding, with strong descriptions to bring the story to life. It was a perfect marriage between character and plot where there was enough of each to support one another successfully.
The originality of the story has my applause. I devoured the gore and overall darkness to this tale and I am stunned by some events. I love, love, love Bettina and eventually the twins. With the way the story was written, I even managed to find some - SOME - sympathy towards the woodsman.
Once again, I encourage everyone who loves dark retellings of fairytales to give the Tales of Darkwood a read. This series has blown my mind and I would love others to get the chance to experience it as well. I can not wait to read the On the Patrin Path.
