oh my goodness!!! I’m not sure what I expected from this book, as I love to go into books blind, and … I LOVED IT SO MUCH!
the vibes are: they both die at the end (adult version) 😶
for a magical realism novel, the themes in this book were so so relevant. in a current world that’s still dealing with racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, and turmoil from the panoramic, this story was new and refreshing - and spread awareness of love and peace in a new way!
the concept of having a short string means your life will end sooner than you expect - but does that mean your life isn’t worth it?
it’s the same old story of those in power (in this case, those with long strings) believing that those who are not identical to them are less than. the theme of every human should be treated like a human and not as a lesser being is SO SO IMPORTANT and something that should be preached every day 🥰
it also brings up the point of whether you would look at your string or not to know when you’re going to die. it’s an age old contradiction and one that still plagues me. is it better to not know and live your life without burden? or is it better to know and be prepared for a life without regrets?
for me, I’d choose not to look at the string, no matter how much it would tempt me 😅😅😅
now, this story is not for the happy endings. it is a story about acceptance, perseverance, and making every single day count. it does have its sad moments, of course, and I friggin bawled my eyes out at the end …
BUT this unique lil story captured my heart and is going to be one I’ll be thinking about for a very long time
rating: 5 stars
