The Vegetarian by Han Kang

4.0

This was not a pleasurable read, nor was it written to give any reader such a positive feeling. The title character gets people close to her (or at least close to the role she plays in their life or imagination) to reveal their, and society’s and history’s faults. You know how, when watching a scary movie, you hold up your hands to your eyes and watch through the spaces between your fingers? That is how it felt to read parts of this. Still, it is expertly composed and expressed. It upsets and confuses, but it gets to you.
