The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender

5.0

This book! I don’t think I’ve ever finished a library book then immediately ordered myself a copy to own forever.

On Rose’s 9th birthday she finds that she can taste her mother’s hidden emotions through her cooking. Her sadness, anxiety, desires. Quickly Rose discovers she can tastes and hold the emotions of anyone who’s cooking she eats. The premise of this book is absolutely fascinating and so well done.

I found myself so absorbed in this story, and appreciated that Rose’s gift just became a part of herself so the development and story of her family’s difficult, but realistic dynamic could take the forefront.

This is a beautiful, quick read about the things families don’t tell each other and how those secrets affect everyone even when, or especially when they don’t know them.
