The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee

5.0

I picked this up because there’s been a lot of buzz about it. The overall thesis is that racism hurts the vast majority of white people, which is not a new idea, but there were definitely some great examples that went into more detail I hadn’t known. This is very approachable (read: non-academic) and left me wanting more detail, at times, but still incredibly well-researched. The author also gives some examples of how communities have moved past racial divisions to work together for a “solidarity dividend” that benefits everyone. I find it energizing to read specifics on the value of bringing an abundance mindset to racial justice work.
