Bright We Burn by Kiersten White
5.0
WOW. I just have to say this series is incredibly interesting and completely absorbing. You just fall into the world as you read. It feels like fantasy, yet it's more "historical" fiction. It has made me want to look into the history of the Ottoman Empire. Istanbul was once Constantinople you know ... but that's nobody's business but the Turks. ;) None of the characters are perfect, they all have flaws, most are unlikable at times. And yet ... we love them and are completely invested in their lives. So complex, and layered ... and wonderful! And this third and final book wrapped up everything (as some books do, ending, then extending years into the future to explain everything and bring it all to a close).
I listened to the audio edition of all three books. The narrator was wonderful and really added to the ambience of this world. Loved the accent and the voices. And the names ... I have to say, when I read the blurb or other reviews, I almost don't recognize the names! I wouldn't have that some would be spelled that way, or if I'd seen them in print, I would have pronounced them differently.
I can't remember if there was profanity. Lots (and LOTS) of violence. Some sex, though nothing explicit ... there were LGBTQ characters, and they were honestly the most likeable (lovable really), and the only ones who seemed able to have a successful relationship.
Love a series that is written so well it doesn't feel like it's been written at all ... just something you experience. :)
