And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman

emotional reflective sad

4.0

This journey into a beloved Grandpa’s brain affected by dementia is piercingly poignant. I’ve watched and cared for more than a few loved ones, ‘lost and shaking their squares’, and this short account of the interactions between Grandpa, son and grandson hit the spot. The confusion, frustration and desperation of Grandpa as he struggles with fading memory and the calm maturity of his grandson Noah as he attempts to heal and care for his grandfather is both heartbreaking and uplifting. Through their relationship Backman allows us to grieve the loss of humanity as we recognise it, while rejoicing in the bonds of love that last forever.

Beautifully written and illustrated ♥️
