Wow. Kate Allen is a master of intricately woven narrative and emotional punches to the gut. While marketed as a book for children, I think this book is a new fiction classic. Allen tackles grief with surgical precision and weaves together motifs of ocean life in a way that gives the whole story even more depth. It’s complex, it’s real, it’s moving. I’ll be thinking about this one for a long time.
