Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

This book has been on my TBR for so long, but I am glad to have read it on Halloween.
Witches gave perfect vibes for Halloween.

This is one of the books that I considered long, but all of the scenes are necessary, having consequences that build-up toward the finale, not fillers.

Mostly this book is unique, complex, and overall a good read. I like the worldbuilding, the French setting, the magic system was unique and complex, but it did take me a while to understand. I like that this book has a different take on witches from how it’s often portrayed.

I like Lou, because she’s not portrayed as an innocent good girl as most MCs.

I only simp for dark-haired male leads, then there’s Reid. I'd admit I wanted to smack him in the head in the early chapters. While most MLs have the bad-boy veneer, Reid was generally stiff and decent. But he did become refreshing as he started to open up in the end.

I did like and rooted them as a couple, so kudos to that!

And the side characters! Oh, this book has the best side characters, compared to other books, where I just barely like or care about them. I like Coco and Ansel and Beau, each written with distinct personalities and characteristics, and not only there to crowd the cast!

I predicted half the plot twist, I knew that the archbishop had a dirty secret and I was 80% right about Reid’s parentage.

I’ve seen reviews that the sequel is mediocre, so they would have to wait before I start picking them up. Meanwhile, I’d take Serpent and Dove as a standalone.
