Faebound by Saara El-Arifi
5.0
Fae, elves, and humans used to live alongside one another however now only elves exist locked in a forever war between clans, determined to gain control over a precious element.
I can’t remember a single name from this story but we are following a general who makes one false move and is exiled from her home. Alongside her, we follow her sister and a man who is her sister’s love interest.
The set-up of the world dynamics made it somewhat clear that fae and maybe humans would have a part to play in the story but my jaw was still on the floor when we got to the reveal that not only were the fae still alive but they have a vibrant community AND the obeah are linked to the fae?! Absolutely mindblown!
I had such a good time with this story even if a couple of the twists and turns felt pretty obviously foreshadowed. I loved the queernormativeness of the world and thought the lore felt unique and intriguing. I was left feeling desperate for the next book in the series but I also felt as though this was a very solid book in its own right and did a great job of laying a foundation for what was to come. I am very excited to continue next year.
