A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
5.0
After a lukewarm start with A Court of Thorns and Roses, and all the extreme hype I've been seeing all over the world of Bookstagram and the hype my friends were throwing my way (I'm looking at you Ragan, Hayden and Katie), A Court of Mist and Fury had to deliver in order to make me happy, and trust me when I tell you that it DELIVERED!
This book was so freaking good, it shocked me at times because I never really realized it whilst reading it.
I'll be discussing spoilers, so continue at your own peril.
First of all, hands-down the best thing about ACOMAF is Rhysand, you can't even bother suggest anything that was better than gorgeous Rhys in this book.
The story took a wild turn, where the main love interest was discarded and turned into a villain, and the villain was turned into the love interest, which was something that I hadn't expected since it has not really happened a lot in fantasy books to begin with.
I absolutely fell in love with him because he was this loyal, passionate, gorgeous, witty, sarcastic character, that was also broken in some ways that made me fall for him even more.
Usually, the female character is the one who's broken and all that, which Feyre definitely is, but it was Rhysand talking about it, explaining everything to Feyre about what happened from the beginning, how he knew when she was his mate, and everything he did to protect her and Velaris is what made this a 5 star book for me.
A lot of authors try to replicate the kind of character Rhysand has, but it doesn't usually work the way they want it to, and I've really realized that after discovering who he actually was.
Just saying, he's most definitely one of the best characters I've ever read about in books.
The plot was quite intriguing, even if I'm not the biggest fan of war stories, but Sarah J Maas's beautiful writing style and the way she describes things like Velaris made it a very enjoyable read for me.
ACOMAF is definitely better because of its cast of characters, rather than for its plot, which is fine by me cause I'd read anything about Cassian, Azriel and Mor. She really did a fantastic job crafting who these characters are, and I'm very interested to see Azriel's development since he was the least developed one in the series so far.
Feyre really became a likable character when she defended Velaris against the invaders, those scenes of her manipulating her strong as hell powers to decimate the bad guys were marvelous and it was in those scenes that I finally started to really enjoy her as a character.
Even though Nesta and Elaine were not really big in this book, I really enjoyed Nesta being Nesta (even though she lost that tiny softness she developed in ACOTAR) and I'm quite excited and intrigued to see how they handle the transformation they went through.
Villain talk! The King of Hybern wasn't exactly the biggest threat until we really saw him in those last couple of chapters, and adding the Mortal Queens to the equation was a really good decision on SJM's behalf, it just added more characters to hate and to enjoy seeing them get their asses handed to them by Feyre next book (RIP bitchy yet believes-in-love lion haired Queen!)
The sex scenes were INSANE and CRINGY as hell and I loved every second of it lol, like you could tell she was trying to come out of the YA genre by having them do it 7 times in one chapter, and then once after that in the following one, it made me laugh, it turned me on, it was fantastic. (Fingering trigger warning+soup)
I kind of hated the ending, although I literally sighed and took a deep breath when they said their mate bond wasn't cut (Like thank you Jesus) and although I'm really into the idea of Feyre being a spy within the Spring Court, I absolutely hate that we're living with Tamlin again... Lucien better wake the hell up and do whatever Feyre asks him to (Also, major bombshell, LUCIEN AND ELAIN!)
I'm literally dying to get my hands on A Court of Wings and Ruin, like I just ordered it minutes after finishing this one, this series got real good and I'm looking forward to the next chapter.
