Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Well this book wasn't as horrible as I was worried it was going to be but the good bits and bad bits can easily be summed up in one sentence.

The good bits are the plotty bits that read like a single fantasy novel.

The bad bits are like bad fanfiction skipping over and summing it up.

And it is essentially both novel and fanfiction so it somehow makes sense. But you'll be reading and it's like...a bit is explained quickly but because you've not read the years before it's just like...alright. Simon Snow is based off Harry Potter and just like thar series it can't just be all one book. Also what was with the Twilight-esque scenes?

It was pretty predictable in places but the characters were likable enough and aspects of the plot were really good. But it did feel like the romance and the fact it was only one novel was a bit of a let down. That maybe if you'd been on the journey with them it would work better.

So I wouldn't say this is amazing but it's not terrible either. Enjoy it for what it is and you're fine but don't expect an amazing novel.
