Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews
3.0
What in the holy generational trauma did I just read? This started off weak - would have DNF'ed it if it hadn't been on my TBR for years. Writing isn't particularly strong, lack of character development and god bless I felt like I was living in the attic with those kids real time for years. Moves verrrrry slow for first 50%. But once the plot takes off, boy oh boy does it take off. Multi-layers of child abuse, CRAZY unimaginable wealth, incestuous relationships in multiple generations and all around lying and complete lack of maternal love. 4 kids (Carrie, Cory, Cathy and Chris) end up losing their well to do father in an unexpected car accident and their mom needs to move back in with her wealthy parents that had disowned her. In a bid to get back into her dad's good graces (and his LOADED will), she hides her children away in a gigantic unused attic of her parent's mega mansion. Grandma is in on the lie and she, like her daughter Corrine, has NO business having kids. I found myself getting irritated at the storyline because it 1) seemed so ridiculously implausible and 2) they couldn't figure out how to run away or tell someone??? This was veering closer to a 2 star read for me but honestly, the twists and turns in the end had me sucked in. Corrine (mom to 4 kids) is totally the villain but isn't exactly like she had good role models to learn from. All in all, apparently money runs deeper than blood in this story. She totally sells out her biological children for in inheritance. She doesn't deserve those kids (or that money). All around, this book was full of shitty people.
