don't even know where to start. I saw an interview the author had one morning. I couldn't believe she wrote this book as a teen and it was an Oprah Book Club pick. Some  of Oprah's picks have been a definite miss. Nightcrawling was not one of those misses.

Nightcrawling is a superb piece of writing period. It was raw, gritty, jarring and in your face about the down side of black pain and poverty. This book by no means is written like trauma porn, which I appreciated.

Kiara and her brother Marcus are the central characters. They are trying to make it without their parents. Their mother was incarcerated and their dad was dead. Kiara ended up doing some very questionable things to pay the bills while Marcus had his head in the sand "trying" to make it as a rapper.

This book was heartbreaking but was so necessary. I cannot say enough good things about this book. Please experience this book for yourself.
