Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson

3.0

I don't normally read superhero comics, but this was recommended to me by someone I trust, and I rather enjoyed it! Great artwork, funny, and this first volume sets everything up nicely.

Miss Marvel has a similar thing to Spiderman, where you follow an average geeky teen who suddenly has powers, though Kamala Khan's experiences were a lot different than what I am used to seeing in the superhero world, since she is Muslim. That was super cool! Try sneaking out to fight crime when you have traditional, overprotective parents that won't let you go to a party, let alone fight a deranged bird man (as a white boy, my parents were shockingly permissive of my vigilante streak).

I liked that her shape-shifting powers nicely mirror her identity struggle, and I have to say the popular teens in Ms. Marvel are delightfully vapid and insufferable--the concern-trolling, the way the blonde girl centered the whole news story around her even though she didn't do anything--spot on, I hated them almost immediately.

I'm definitely curious to see where Kamala's story goes next! 3.5 stars
