Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

5.0

Wow - I inhaled this novel. Tracy Deonn really created something heartbreakingly magical in this book. Using her own familial history, folk traditions, Arthurian legend and the collective history of African Americans, she threads a beautiful woven tapestry of a fantasy story that decolonizes the Arthurian myth.

I want to give a more detailed account of just how superbe this book is but I do not want to spoil anything for those who read it. I came into the book with a very vague idea of the story and it surpassed my expectations. (I knew it’d be a good story I just wasn’t prepared for this magnificence.)

That being said Tracy Deonn shines a beacon of light on the historical (& contemporary) trauma Black Americans have to live with on a daily basis - all while telling this imaginative and unique fantasy story. Parts of this book are tough to read (but in a way necessary for some to experience - i.e my fellow white people) and are very emotional. Please check the TW before reading.

LL McKinney said it best “Tracy Deonn captivates you from page one with her perfect pacing, exhilarating plotting and a command of storytelling that cannot be ignore.”

Bree truly is legendary. Her struggle, vulnerability, strength of character, tenacity and ultimate journey to self discovery will stay with me for a while.

I cannot wait to see where the story continues in the next book. I will cheer when she burns it all to the ground.

I highly recommend this book. It is worth all the hype ten times over.
