City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

5.0

I absolutely love this series so far. As I mentioned in my review of City of Bones, Clare writes for an intelligent audience, not lovestruck teenagers. The plot well thought out and intricate and she gives her characters an amazing depth and emotion that tends to be missing from a lot of teen fiction. But most of all, I love the complexity of the relationship between Jace and Clary. This book is so hard to put down, I read the last 300 pages in one night.

Update 2013: I've decided to re-read the original trilogy before the movie comes out and I am enjoying them just as much the second time around. What I love most about this book is Clare doesn't fall into what I consider the "Second Book Trap." So many authors of series like this feel the need to physically separate the romantic leads in the second novel, thinking once they've gotten together they need something to keep them interesting. Clare inserted a twist into the first novel that carries over throughout the first 3 books of the series that's much more interesting and manages to keep the relationship between Jace and Clary fresh and unpredictable. That's one of my favorite things about these books - they don't follow the typical tropes many Teen Paranormal Fantasy series adhere to.
