The Adventure of the Peculiar Protocols: Adapted from the Journals of John H. Watson, M.D. by Nicholas Meyer

5.0

Well... In many ways this book was exactly what I imagined it would be: An excellent pastiche. Meyer's footnotes are - as always - intriguing and sometimes hilarious, the language very close to Doyle's, the characters true to the original and at the same time provided with a trifle more depth. And yet this book was so very different from what I imagined it would be. Not only does it address very sensitive topics like antisemitism and feature terrible historic events such as the Anti-Jewish pogroms in Russia, but it also focuses on topics which were important back then and are still so very relevant today: The spreading of fake news, misinformation and people who believe anything if they want to, regardless of the facts. What does a hero like Holmes - a victorian detective whose methods are based on true cold reason (and perfectly suitable to solve riddles and curious little mysteries) - have in hand against the crimes of the 20th century? I read this book because I wanted to be entertained, in the end it gave me lot to think about.
