The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
3.25
It's a fun story. Interesting with just as interesting twists. But the literal cringe made this a three-month-book-read.
To be bad at mirroring how teenagers act is one thing, bless her, but bffr. The dialogue is genuinely uncomfortable. Like, someone needs to bully the fuck out of them.
The amount of times Jameson calls Avery 'Heiress'?? I get it's supposed to be quirky and 'their thing' but it is just puke inducing and irritating. Legit giving the whole book series of Chloe Walsh.
And the characters themselves are just asking to be bullied. Bro, legit what is this??? The romance is a 13 year olds first fanfic (which equals the writing in this ngl) and the Hawthornes do not live up to the hype. Mind you, this is in Texas. One of them wears cowboy boots and has a deep Texan drawl. I'm sure that seeps into your expectation for the rest of the brothers. And it's so weird, because I loved little white lies and deadly little scandals which were even more catered to teens (As far as I remember) but those books where not HALF as cringe-inducing as this.
Can I also just say, I'm like 84% sure that Mrs. Barnes has a thing for possible incest. Seriously. That shit is also in the other book series. And the 'Avery is so different, yes she is' is just the cherry on top. Again, also in the other book series. Same thing. She's so different from other girls.
Either way. I enjoyed the story. If you're under 16, and grew up on wattpad, you probably would not mind any of it.
Also, I don't actually remember how old the guys are, besides that Nash is in his twenties, but I do believe the rest of them are like 19 or sth.
And 19 and acting like they're men? Like GROWN men? 'I'll protect you, Avery'. GET OUT. OMG GET OUT.
