My Best Rival by Dougie K. Powell

5.0

This book is definitely needed for whoever needs this book: People who are needing support with identity may find some resonance and some readers may just need to hear the story to gain a different perspective. I don't want to spoil the story but I also want people to find it; it covers coming out, it covers transgender, it covers mental health, asexuality, demisexuality to name a few. This book is suitable for YA, the intimacy is off page, and I hope both young adults and adults find this book. The characters seem very mature and maybe international boarding school requires you to grow up quickly, there were some very big feelings to work through. I was so glad both Ru and Ocean had such an amazing friend group, they added so much more depth to the story. I looked back to my time away at university and you do find your people who are willing to fight in your corner. Ru and Ocean start off physically fighting, which of course leads to other things. Enemies to lovers always creates an angsty story. This is no walk in the park romance, because, Ocean has a secret that no one else knows and this brings lots of secret tears, sleepless nights and fear. The story takes a sharp turn, leaving Ocean to take time away and Ru to be very much left in the dark. When Ocean returns there is confusion, and Ru doesn't know where he stands, he only knows that his heart is breaking. A story that is impossible to take sides, the reader knows both sides of the story with the dual POV. Sensitively written, I learned a lot from this book, I could hear the author addressing the usual hate that comes when discussing gender. This is a romance story so of course there is a happy ending, which is just the start of Ru and Ocean together. I would love to read about Ru and Ocean in ten years time, to see how far their relationship has come. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
