Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven

3.0

Wow. What a start. Definitely a character perspective I've never read before. All of the fat/overweight/plus sized protagonists I've read before have maybe an extra 20 lbs on them and the entire book and their entire personality becomes about their weight.

It's really interesting reading a narrative that finally shines a light on fat phobia and the absolute hatred and disgust many people have for those of us who carry extra weight. Just for existing we are ridiculed and shamed. I'm grateful to this author for showing what that can look like, even at the young age of 10. And I'm thankful for having a main character who shows how confusing and life-altering that hatred can be.

"Why should my weight affect other people? I mean, unless I'm sitting on them, who cares?"

There were elements of this book that really pushed the bullying in relation to the main character's weight (and other fat people in her school) to quite an extreme. I'm not sure it needed to go that far.

The other main character is afflicted with face blindness and, to me, his experiences pale in comparison. However, there were some aspects of it I had never considered that his character experiences and I'm glad for that awareness.

This is the second book I have read by this author. Generally, I'm glad she's shining a light on the topics she chooses, but it often feels she kind of misses the mark in how she does so.
