Unstable Connections by Nicky James

adventurous challenging emotional mysterious tense medium-paced

5.0

AMAZING.

"Unstable Connections" is my favourite of these books to date. I devoured it, start to finish.
It's addictive and high-stakes, emotional and angsty, full of twists and turns and shocking discoveries, and, of course, a beautiful romance that left me soaring with happiness.

Aslan and Quaid's latest adventure was absolutely gripping. The mystery kept me hooked from the very start, and I kept guessing up until the very end: unlike the previous books, I had no idea where Nicky James was headed with this mystery, and let me tell you, those last chapters were absolutely chilling and shocking.

Quaid goes through a lot, especially considering how close he is to the case at the centre of this novel, and I really felt for him. I think he might be one of the most relatable characters I've read about in quite a long time: his insecurities, his neediness, his bone-deep loneliness and desperate craving for affection and stability and love, ugh, I REALLY felt close to him, because yeah, same. I loved him, even when he was acting like an idiot.

(One minor niggle I had though: I'm not sure if it's a character trait or not, especially considering how neurotic Quaid is about his and other people's health, but I didn't appreciate his comments about people in their sixties being old, frail and ancient, because well, modern medicine does wonders and sixty isn't AT ALL old; but yeah, that was one thing that has been bothering me a bit since the start, but otherwise I really do love him.)

And Aslan? Aslan is the best.
He was the absolute perfect partner to him: patient and understanding, loving and affectionate. He's such a great character and I can, once again, confirm that my crush on him hasn't diminished in the least. On the other hand, it has only grown and ugh, I'd cheerfully take on the world for him. He deserves every good thing in the universe.
The side characters also shone during this third book: I loved Eden and Torin and Allison so damn much, and I can't wait to see what else this team of detectives gets up to.

I cannot wait to read the next book! And I'm so excited to see Aslan and Quaid's relationship flourish even more. I love them so much okay?!
