In the vein of Lovecraft Country, but with a Southern spin, Ring Shout is a short, compelling horror novella that, as with Lovecraft Country, makes clear America's traditions of white supremacy are a horror tale that is truly a story of the country itself. Even so, the book never exploits experiences of African American trauma to propel its plot. We understand that demons have capitalized on hatred, but the evils are truly human ones. Clark provides a wide representation of experiences in his cast of characters making this a welcome portrayal of Black life from multiple angles.
