Too Hostile by Nicole Dykes
4.0
The thing I love about Nicole Dyke’s books the most is that they are low angst, I think I’ve said that in about every review I’ve written. Too Hostile does not go in this category for me (but only barely). Let me tell you why.
Ronan got my blood pumping from the minute he was introduced. He makes snap assumptions about Fletcher and seriously dislikes him based off these and his life experiences (which we find out about later). Fletcher doesn’t really help but he’s pushing Ronan’s buttons to flirt. I honestly didn’t like Ronan at the beginning, his internal monologue made me so angry. (That’s just one of my pet peeves).
Fletcher knows exactly what he’s doing with Ronan. He loves getting under his skin and wants him to use his growls voice on him. Things do come to a head and Fletcher reveals some of his past to Ronan, which changes his perspective on him. These two share some similar experiences which allows Ronan to let down his guard a bit.
Once these two start going at it, oh my. I’m pretty sure my phone battery started dying faster just from how good their chemistry is. This might be the spiciest Nicole Dykes book I’ve read (it’s been a while since I’ve read Hostile so I can’t relate to that one). These two are fire. But it’s only a summer fling, as they decided and Ronan frequently points out.
I was so frustrated with Ronan near the end. Nicole talks about this in her Author’s Note at the end of the book. Even before reading this I tried to remember everything he went through as a child and what he thought he would be giving up in order to be with Fletcher, because I have never experienced what these two have.
Fletcher put in a lot of work for this man throughout this book. I think that’s what kept this from being 5 stars for me. There was no balance anywhere between the two. They get their HEA which is great, but Ronan doesn’t have to work for it. (I guess he does a bit at the end but we don’t see that, it’s between the end and epilogue).
This was a great story, and we get to see a lot of the family and their antics. They are constantly making themselves at home to Fletcher’s apartment but he loves it. And Ronan and Fletcher are great together, Ronan is hot and possessive while Fletcher is domestic and sweet. These two love to Netflix and chill minus the chilling.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
