Book Review: Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld

Romantic Comedy is a women’s fiction novel about a television sketch writer that falls for a famous pop musician.
Sally Milz is a comedy writer that has been creating sketches for the weekly show The Night Owls for nine years. It’s been been her dream job and even if the schedule is crazy and her love live is nil she has great friends. But the latest guest and musical host (Noah Brewster) is one of the world’s most famous pop stars and he makes an immediate connection with Sally. Unfortunately, after an uncomfortable conversation they lose touch for two years until a world wide epidemic puts them back in contact. Sally will have her ideas about love, attraction and getting what you deserve tested as she falls for Noah all over again.
Romantic comedy is a breath of fresh air in the romance genre. We have a smart, educated, accomplished but flawed main character that has an entire life filled with friends, co-workers and family (her step father and his beloved Beagle) and career highs/lows before she even meets the love interest. And Noah is a kind, thoughtful and romantic leading man that although he’s a successful musician isn’t toxic, damaged or a “skirt chaser”.  Some of the descriptions of the sketches had me laughing out loud and I was touched by the scenes that dealt with caring for a Covid patient. I would get so engrossed in the story that I would lose touch with time and not check to see how much of the book I had left (which is one of my toxic traits).
I highly recommend Romantic Comedy to readers that enjoy a love story between two grown ups that are willing to navigate all the tough parts about building a life together.
