Keeping 13 by Chloe Walsh

5.0

ā€œ Everything else was inconsequential in this moment, because Johnny was my boyfriend, and my boyfriend had me on my back, making my body shake and tremble. It was the only male touch Iā€™d ever welcomed.ā€ ~ Shannon Lynch

This was an emotional rollercoaster. The spectrum of emotions makes it worthwhile, filled with humor and genuine love between the characters. It captured an intense and authentic portrayal of abusive family dynamics. Joey and Aoife, as well as Gibsie and Claire, are portrayed with excitement and depth that I find myself anticipating their books. The story also leaves me craving more, especially the complex future situation between Lizzie, Katie, and Hughie.

I'll never recover from the emotional impact of this book. Johnny and Shannon was exciting to follow as they navigated their relationship. One of the book's strengths lies in its realistic portrayal of the characters' age and the challenges they face. The reality check they experienced about being young and still being children added to the narrative. It's a gentle reminder that amidst the chaos, these characters are still navigating the complexities of being a teenager.

The resolution of Shannon's relationship with her parents, resonated deeply with me. Walsh handled this aspect with sensitivity, shining a light on the harsh realities faced by kids like Shannon and her siblings. It's a poignant and thought-provoking element that added depth to the overall narrative. Lastly, the love for Shannon's brothers is a sentiment I wholeheartedly share.
