Holy hell in a handbasket I was NOT ready for this book. The best way to describe my reading experience is that this book rocked my world. It literally shredded my heart and repaired it all in 300 pages.
For context, I picked this book up on a whim because it was under "best smut" in a TikTok and was described as "cowboys who like BDSM." Like okay, color me INTRIGUED. So I read it and sobbed almost nonstop for the first 30% of this book. It destroyed me. And I knew that it would get better in terms of, there would be relationship rebuilding occurring but the pain of getting there was real. I have a soft spot for second chance romances already. So the things that Jake was saying to Conor had me in emotional distress (but in a good way). I was crying at everything he told her and it just mended the same heart that it ripped out at the start of the book. Like okay little spoiler, he never kissed anyone else besides Connor even after 4 or so years apart?!?! Shut the f up!! I GOBBLED that shit UP!
To say that Jake and Conor were soulmates would actually be an understatement. They were each other's other half; the way they were there for each other in ways only they could be just stole my heart. I prefer to keep my reviews spoiler free so I really can't discuss their relationship more without spoiling anything but I cannot get over the way they loved each other, I ate that shit up. the way that Jake, to put it mildly, groveled because he was dead set on him and Conor being endgame just made me so emotional and made me swoon so hard.
There is literally nothing that I found wrong with this book. At first, I was very skeptical of Jake taking on their "therapeutic" role for Conor because it seemed weird but I slowly realized that no one else would have been able to get Conor to open up like Jake did so it ended up being really sweet.
Because I want to keep this spoiler free (except for that one little slip-up but it was too cute not to include) I am gonna stop myself here, just know that I absolutely adored this book. Some of my favorite books have been those that emotionally rip me open but also mend it back together better than it was before, this book did that and more. If I could rate it more than 5 stars I honestly would. So yeah it gets 5 huge gigantic stars from me. Impatiently waiting for the next two books in the series to come in the mail because I am definitely continuing this and am excited to read more from this author as this was my first!
Please read TWs as this was super dark at times and it's always important to keep your mental health in mind first!
