i’m always a sucker for queer historical fiction and this book really hits hard. it did take me a little bit to get into, but around halfway through i was hooked, so i encourage you to give it a chance.
the diversity of lesbian characters is so beautiful, and the relationship between kath and lily captures the essence of lesbian awakening and love so perfectly.
also really good to see how culture can be so deeply intertwined with sexuality, and Lo presents a really nuanced perspective on this.
there is a hopeful ending, i can’t call it happy because the entire book is heart breaking. but it’s a reminder of how much progress has been made. how hard the lesbians before us worked.
Lo said it perfectly in the dedication, to all butches and femmes. past, present and future
